Want to know what the heck Silver Star's about? Well, here's a synopsis.
For many years, wolves and wild dogs had been allies, repairing the trust between them had had long since been broken by the domestication of dogs. The trust and friendship had always been symbolic, before the Silver Star Alliance, a combined pack of wolves and dogs. The Silver Star Alliance's territory is marked by a large black mountain surrounded by a star shaped river. When flowing, the river looks like melted silver, thus giving the alliance the name "Silver Star."
At the story's beginning, the pack is led by a white German Shepherd named Shiro. He had taken over for the pack's former leader, a black wolf named Naiya, who had recently had pups, becoming too wound up in her family to lead properly.
But Shiro is young, and expecting pups of his own, so he is more of an apprentice to Naiya than a replacement, still inexperienced with much to learn. He is very naive and unsure of himself, and when a stranger had reportedly stepped into the pack's territory, he gave the order for the highest ranking members of the pack, including himself to go greet the stranger, and depending on the circumstances, drive it away, or welcome it to the pack.
The stranger was a mutant dog, a Shikoku Inu named Tamatsume, that had chalky white fur, a black horse-like mane, a long, thin body, and two mechanical legs, the right front and left rear. Shiro sent his best friend, a black lab named Wing back to the pack to call for backup, and as soon as Wing left, Tamatsume attacked, killing all but Shiro.
Confident that Wing was coming back with help, Shiro fought back alone, trying only to keep Tamatsume away from the pack. Wing and the backup never came. They were ambushed and killed by Ken, Tamatsume's lieutenant. Shiro's body was found the next day by Keda, the mother of Shiro's unborn pups.
As soon as Keda had her pups, she was recommended by Naiya to leave them with humans. One of them, a small but strong male, was left with a hunter, who named him Jack. While his owner trained Jack to be a hunting dog, his older dog, a Shepherd/Husky mix named Dakota served as foster mother to the young pup. Soon afterward, the hunter adopted five new puppies, and one of them was a female Golden Retriever, named Anna, who joins Jack under the care of Dakota and trains alongside him, becoming his best friend.
When Jack and Anna were 10 months old, they had become the hunter's best dogs, and were chosen to lead the four other dogs on a hunting trip. They were going after the wolves living in what remained of the Silver Star Alliance, as the dogs and wolves had fought ever since Shiro died and split into seperate packs. Keda led the dogs and Naiya led the wolves.
Coming into Silver Star territory, the hunting party was quickly ambushed by Tamatsume and Ken. All were killed except for Jack and Anna, and no one knew what had become of Dakota, who was locked in the hunter's house. After Tamatsume and Ken left, Jack saw his mother for the first time, and learns the story of his family. The young German Shepherd is amazed that he came from a family of wild dogs, and wishes to one day lead the pack.
His wish comes true when a member of the wolf pack, to save his own life, gives away information regarding Keda's and Naiya's families and leadership to Tamatsume, and shortly after, both leaders vanish, their heads found on a tree branch the next day. Jack, being the son of Keda, is chosen to lead the dog pack, and Naiya's son, Koutei, is chosen to lead the wolf pack.
Two years later, Jack and Anna have three sons, Crossblade, Kaston, and Sandstorm. Jack later faces a shocking return, the battle against Tamatsume, and the gradual reunion of the Silver Star Alliance.
